The 1st and 2nd batches of the Augmented Reality (AR) Workshop were conducted on the 3-6 September, and 18-21 September respectively, in the Malaysia Automotive Institute Resource Centre, (MAIRC) Rawang, Selangor. This workshop is open to the public and it’s FREE!
We spoke to participants from the first two batches to gather their experience in the workshop.
“I am interested in AR because it is in line with the fourth industrial revolution. Furthermore, its expansion is not only applicable in Malaysia but, the whole world. In order to improve our technological expertise within the country, we must stay updated with the latest advancements concerning the expansion of the automotive industry”, said Ahmad Firdaus, a mechanical engineer in the Mechanical Development Department of MIMOS Berhad.
Firdaus explained the importance of AR in terms of the automotive industry, saying that this technology can supplement the manufacturing sector, in particular, the assembly process. He said, AR has the ability to reduce human errors which in turn, increases efficiency.
“This workshop has enabled me to further understand the concepts and applications of AR through the introduction of open-source software such as Blender. Adding on to that, this training has also given me some knowledge on how to create an application that implements and make full use of this technology,” he explained.
Although this workshop is catered towards the usage of AR within the automotive industry, it did not stop a lecturer from being a participant. Despite being out of her field, Siti Fatimah was keen on attending this workshop to see its implementation in the education sector of Malaysia.
The lecturer from Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah, Behrang, said, “Despite not being directly involved in the automotive industry, I was still keen on participating in this training session so that I can know how it will revolutionize education in our country”.
“I think AR is important in terms of education because it allows students to be more advanced. Moreover, the students nowadays are not really book-oriented. They are more device-oriented, or what I call, the Alpha Generation where they prefer to gain knowledge through visual aids and this technology can be used by educators as a tool to transfer knowledge to the students in a more fun and interactive way”, she added.
This workshop is a part of our Digital Engineering Program (DEP), a program that aims to develop talents in line with the fourth industrial revolution.
