The Autoshow That Is Designed for All

Malaysia Automotive Institute takes a step further this year by taking the Malaysia’s largest annual autoshow to a whole new level. Malaysia Autoshow 2017, with the theme of “Smart, Safe and Sustainability Mobility” will take place on the 9th to 12th November from 10am until 9pm at the Malaysia Argo Exposition Park, Serdang (MAEPS).  MAEPS will be the nation's largest autoshow venue, will be the first autoshow in Malaysia to feature a symposium and music festival.


The Kuala Lumpur International Automotive Symposium (KLIAS) and SoundValley Festival 2017 will be held concurrently with Malaysia Autoshow 2017, in the same location.

Malaysia Autoshow 2017 brings in more excitement this year, with a total of 170 exhibitors coming to showcase a wide range of automotive elements, providing motor enthusiasts to gain an insight of the products and services that are being offered by their favourite brand.

This is a must-attend event where visitors are allowed to test drive different models of cars from different brands, in search for the ideal car. The test drives take place on a 3 km test route, so visitors can truly experience the models they are testing.

For those who love speed, Karting Slalom is one of many outdoor activities during the event on 11th and 12th of November from 9AM to 6PM. Introduced by the International Karting Commission of the Federation International de l’Automobile (FIA), this event is specially catered for visitors who have never competed in motorsports.


Karting Slalom is available not just for adults but also for children from 8 years old and above. Vouchers worth RM2,000 of BHP fuel will be given to winner, RM 1,500 of BHP fuel for second-place and RM 1,000 for third-place.  All qualifiers will also receive a fuel voucher worth RM 30 from BHP. SoundValley Festival 2017


Malaysia Automotive Institute and RSVP Media Sdn Bhd is presenting a one-of-a-kind combo, integrating the Malaysia Autoshow 2017 with SoundValley Festival. 


The music festival will take place on 11th and 12th November from 2pm until 11.30pm and will be a new experience for visitors where motor enthusiasts and music fans come together in a common platform to share their interests. 


SoundValley Festival 2017 will be featuring eleven local and internationally renowned bands from Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and England. The bands are Bloc Party, Bunkface, Hujan, Barasuara, and The Otherside Orchestra who will be performing on the first day.


Another group of bands including Loudness, Wings, May, Metalasia, FiftyOne50 and Cassandra will be performing on the second day of SoundValley Festival 2017.

RapidKL busses will be available every hour from 8:30am – 9pm at KTM Serdang on the weekdays and there will be 4 busses on the weekend operating from 8:30am – 12am! RapidKL Bus will drop you off at the public parking area, GATE 1 while the shuttle service will be available every 15mins at the public parking area, GATE 1 to take you directly to the exhibition halls.

What Makes a Car Qualified to be Called an EEV?


With so much buzz about Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEVs) entering the market, do we really know what qualifies them to be one? Does a vehicle qualify as an EEV just by emitting less carbon monoxide? Not sure? Well, here’s a list of criteria that will surely help you identify the next EEV you see.

Malaysia has taken the issue of air pollution seriously so much so that the National Automotive Policy 2014 (NAP2014 ) was announced in 2014 with the main objective of making Malaysia a regional automotive hub of EEVs. According to the Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI).

Many may not realise that EEVs are not just electric vehicles. In general, EEVs are any vehicle that complies to a set of fuel efficiency standards (1/100km) and carbon emission requirements (g/km).

This includes vehicles with any powertrain, such as internal combustion engines (ICE), fuel efficient vehicles, Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and full electric vehicles (EV). The NAP2014 also recognises vehicles propelled by other energy sources such as; Compressed Natural Gas, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Biodiesel, Ethanol, Hydrogen and Fuel Cell.

Fuel efficiency is measured according to the UN ECE R101 standard. The specifications mentioned above are divided into 14 different classes – 10 for cars and four for two-wheeled vehicles. Whichever type of vehicle it is, they would still have to conform to the two criteria – fuel efficiency and carbon emissions. The Malaysian government expects 85% of all vehicles produced locally to be EEVs by 2020. Domestic EEV sales in 2015 and 2016 stood at 32.6% and 42.8% respectively of the overall vehicle sales.

Besides the fact that we get higher fuel economy and cleaner air in our ecosystem, car manufacturers can enjoy tax exemptions on hybrid and electric vehicles BUT it must assembled locally. In the meantime, efforts towards establishing battery manufacturing for EVs in the local scene is underway together with lithium powder, battery cells and battery assembly packs useful for the production of lithium based batteries are all expected to commence by the 2nd quarter of 2017.




Did you know that Malaysia already has electric car charging stations? Yup, you heard that right! These stations are located all over Malaysia including the Klang Valley, Penang, Malacca and Johor. Popular shopping centres such as KLCC, Lot 10, Petronas Solaris and Bangsar Shopping Centre provide this service together with several Nissan service centres. While we were too caught up with other popular brands producing their EEVs, little did we know that we too, have produced our very own EEV! And that’s none other than the Perodua Axia that was launched in September 2014. Want to find out more? KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — Financial information services company BMI Research has ranked Malaysia as among the top 10 most attractive markets for automakers to begin  or maintain automotive manufacturing operations.

Malaysia was also one of the top five most attractive markets in the region in BMI’s Autos Production Risk/Reward Index (RRI).

The Fitch unit gave Malaysia a score of 65.4 out of 100 in BMI’s index, exceeding the Asian average score of 58.5.

BMI cited the nation’s diverse autos production landscape, strong automotive industry policy and good logistics structure.

“Malaysia’s high rank on our Autos Production RRI is largely thanks to its diverse autos production landscape, reflecting the variety of brands being produced in the country (scoring 98.2 out of a possible 100), strong automotive industry policy (scoring 80.9 out of a possible 100) and good logistics infrastructure (scoring 74.5 out of a possible 100),” it said in its report.

Southeast Asia’s third largest economy also scored strongly on the BMI Country Risk pillar at 70.9; its stable long-and short-term economic and political environment with low operational risks was credited for a sound investment backdrop when compared to regional peers.

However, BMI said the country’s small-sized labour force and lower growth opportunities for automakers might be a deterrent.

“Dragging on Malaysia’s attractiveness are low scores of 23.6 and 43.6 out of a possible 100 for its vehicle production growth (based on our five-year average forecast) and size of labour force indicators, which lag well behind the Asia regional averages of 47.1 and 60.1 respectively,” BMI said, pointing out that this is a result of the country’s smaller population and lower growth

opportunities when compared to other countries in the region.

BMI Research is a unit of financial information services giant Fitch Group, which has operations in more than 30 countries.

The MAI-SUT Automotive Scholarship Research Programme is a research based post-graduate studies recently launched under the Transport Innovation Centre (TIC). Researchers work directly with the industry to develop novel solutions ascertained from current trends and demands of the automotive sector.

The TIC, based in Kuching, Sarawak is a collaboration platform between Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) and Swinburne University of Technology (SUT). The TIC provides a research and development platform for a wide range of automotive engineering issues.

TIC is seeking innovative and highly motivated research candidates with backgrounds in engineering fields related to mechanical, electrical, mechatronic, manufacturing, and materials as well as information technology and business to join the scholarship programme.

1. What is this Master program?

Yes you can and as long as the proposed project is on automotive and agreed by MAI.

6. How do I apply?

7. What is the minimum requirement?

MAI-SUT requires minimum CGPA 3.0 in engineering, business or management. However, if you have working experience related to the research you would like to do your CGPA less than 3.0 can be considered.

The term of the study is full time 2 years.

9. Can I do my masters while working?

This Master program is a full time 2 years and students are expected be fully committed and work at the same time.

You will need to be close to the industry of your research. If the industry of your research is in Semenanjung then you will stay there.
